<h2 id="h-addressing-a-growing-public-health-issue" class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Addressing a Growing Public Health Issue</strong></h2>
<p>Skin cancer remains the most common cancer in the U.S., affecting millions of Americans each year, with melanoma carrying the highest risk of mortality. Limited access to dermatologists increases PCPs’ responsibility to evaluate lesions suggestive of skin cancer [2,3].</p>
<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>“Primary care physicians are often the first to encounter suspicious skin lesions, yet many lack significant training and confidence in dermatologic assessment,” said Dr. Dan Siegel, Clinical Professor of Dermatology at SUNY Downstate and former President of the American Academy of Dermatology. “This study demonstrates how the non-invasive DermaSensor technology can significantly enhance diagnostic accuracy and empower clinicians to make more informed, confident decisions for their patients” [1,4].</p></blockquote>
<h2 id="h-overview-and-results-of-the-clinical-studies" class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Overview and Results</strong> <strong>of the Clinical Studies</strong></h2>
<p>The JAAD International study was conducted at UPMC and was the first investigator-initiated study ever conducted with DermaSensor in the United States. This independent, prospective study evaluated patients’ lesions of concern among 150 dermatology patients and found [8]:</p>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Sensitivity and specificity of the device were 100% and 9.4%, respectively, using Investigate Further vs Monitor as the cutpoint for positive vs negative. The publication also reported that sensitivity was 86.4% and specificity was 67.2% when considering 7-10 results as positive and 0-6 results as negative.</li>
<li>59.5% of the Investigate Further false positive results were still considered high risk lesions in that they were actively managed or treated by the study dermatologists.</li>
<li>Overall diagnostic accuracy, i.e., Area Under the Curve (AUC), was 0.79, which was identical to the AUC in the FDA pivotal study with over 1,000 patients and 22 primary care study centers [8].</li>
</ul>
<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>“These results further confirm that the DermaSensor device maintains consistent performance, in this case at a new health system and in the dermatology setting with patients’ suspicious lesions rather than primary care provider selected lesions,” said Dr. Laura K. Ferris, MD, PhD, who was the study’s Principal Investigator and is currently the Chair of Dermatology at UNC Chapel Hill. “This supports the device’s role as an important adjunctive tool for triage and clinical decision-making, helping non-dermatologists identify high-risk lesions with improved performance and confidence.”</p></blockquote>
<p>The DERM-ASSESS III melanoma clinical utility study, published in JCAD, comprised of 118 PCPs that completed assessments of over 10,000 lesion cases. This study found that:</p>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Physician AUC improved significantly with the use of DermaSensor, from 0.630 to 0.671 (p = 0.036) [1].</li>
<li>Melanoma detection increased from 70.2% to 79.1%, decreasing missed melanoma from 29.8% to 20.9% [1,5].</li>
<li>91.5% of the study physicians agreed the device added value to their clinical care [1].</li>
<li>75% agreed it would help detect more skin cancers [1,5].</li>
<li>71% reported increased confidence in evaluating skin lesions [1,8].</li>
</ul>
<h2 id="h-clinical-significance" class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Clinical Significance</strong></h2>
<p>The DermaSensor solution offers rapid, objective assessment of skin lesions at the point of care, providing a 0-10 risk scale with “Investigate Further” or “Monitor” guidance within seconds for suspicious lesions [6,8]. Bridging gaps in dermatology access helps ensure timely evaluation of high-risk lesions while optimizing triage and resource allocation [1,3,5,8].</p>

This latest round of financing comprises most major existing investors, as well as new institutional investors including Pier 70 Ventures, Kern Venture Group, GenHenn Capital, and an undisclosed strategic investor. This additional $16M in capital brings the total investment in the company to $43 million.</p>
<p>The financing follows strong early market traction, with the company already surpassing 20,000 skin lesions scanned with an average quarterly growth rate of 117% since its U.S. commercial launch in mid-2024, following FDA De Novo clearance in early 2024. This strong adoption underscores the demand in primary care for rapid assessments and clinically validated tools that empower physicians for early cancer detection. The device’s strong clinical performance and benefits have been recognized in several top-tier publications, such as Nature, and by many prestigious awards, including TIME’s Best Inventions of 2024.</p>

By assessing features at a cellular level, rather than a lesion’s surface visual appearance, the device has been proven to have sensitivity between 96-100% in several published studies, with specificity as high as 77% for pigmented lesions. As the only automated skin cancer detection device of any kind available for primary care use in the US, the company expects its technology to remain the best-in-class solution. Just from the early commercial use of the device, the company’s AI training dataset has already increased several-fold since the 2,000 lesions originally used to train its currently cleared algorithm. In contrast, image-based AI solutions leverage publicly available datasets of millions of images, but none have been able to achieve FDA clearance despite several such solutions being available in other geographies, such as Europe, and some failing major studies to receive FDA clearance. Many recent publications have shown that applying AI to dermoscopy and/or clinical images presents many challenges, including poor performance on skin of color and also generalizability issues when used in different geographies or by various doctors.</p>

<p><strong>MIAMI, Florida, June 12, 2025</strong> / <a href="https://www.einpresswire.com/article/821297634/published-fda-pivotal-studies-find-dermasensor-has-96-sensitivity-and-cuts-physicians-missed-skin-cancers-by-half">EINPresswire.com</a>/ DermaSensor Inc., in collaboration with faculty from Mayo Clinic, Yale University, the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, and SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, announced the publication of two pivotal studies validating the company’s novel Elastic Scattering Spectroscopy (ESS) device for skin cancer detection in primary care. One study assessed the standalone performance of the ESS device, while the second evaluated how device use impacted primary care physicians (PCPs) skin cancer detection and management.</p>
<p>In the<a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/21501319251344423"> multicenter validation study</a>, led by Mayo Clinic, 1,005 patients and 1,579 lesions were evaluated across 22 primary care sites. Dermatopathologic analysis confirmed 224 skin cancers, including melanomas, basal cell carcinomas, and squamous cell carcinomas. The ESS device was found to have a skin cancer detection rate, or sensitivity, of 96%<sup>1</sup>. This performance level compared favorably to the 90% target based on dermatologists’ sensitivity in the literature, which is also the FDA’s minimum required sensitivity for melanoma. For negative device results, the likelihood that a lesion was benign (i.e. negative predictive value (NPV)) was 97%. For positive results, the likelihood a lesion was cancerous (i.e. positive predictive value (PPV)) ranged from 6% for the lowest score of 1 to 61% for the highest score of 10.</p>
<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>“The DermaSensor device is an easy-to-use, point-of-care, hand-held skin cancer assessment device with high sensitivity and NPV for use in the primary care setting. Use of the device can help inform PCP decision-making about skin lesions suspicious for cancer, which need further evaluation and those that may be monitored,” wrote Stephen Merry, MD, MPH, from Mayo Clinic in the abstract as lead author of the pivotal trial.</p></blockquote>
<p>The<a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/21501319251342106"> companion clinical utility study</a> with 108 physicians found that use of the ESS device significantly enhanced physicians’ ability to identify and correctly refer skin cancers and improved their overall skin lesion management accuracy. PCPs correctly referred 91.4% of malignant lesions when aided by the device, compared to just 82.0% without it—a 50% reduction in missed cancer referrals (from 18.0% to 8.6%)<sup>2</sup>.</p>

While many deadly skin cancer cases are preventable through sun protection and early detection, delayed diagnosis continues to drive unnecessary mortality, morbidity and high healthcare expenses.</p>
